This first instalment features an in conversation, Q&A, and performance by Temesgen Zeleke of the Krar Collective, an Ethiopian band.

Echoes of Africa is a captivating programme and event series that aims to transport audiences and listeners on a musical journey through the rich and diverse tapestry of African traditional music and classic songs. This unique show serves as a cultural bridge that celebrates African heritage, preserves cherished memories, and fosters connections between cultures and generations.

Temesgen plays the Krar, an ancient lyre-like instrument from Ethiopia typically played by specially trained practitioners during religious and cultural ceremonies.

Born in Addis Ababa, Zeleke took up the traditional krar lyre as a teenager, eventually becoming an official artist in Ethiopia’s National Theatre and a student with Mulatu Astatke, the celebrated Ethiopian jazz musician. Moving to London, Zeleke formed the band Krar Collective, performing traditional and cultural music from Ethiopia in festivals around the world. He has been on stage in plays such as the Unicorn Theatre’s Garbage King and the Young Vic’s The Emperor, as well as featuring in Damon Albarn’s Africa Express shows and releasing a track with Paul Weller.

Each episode/event of Echoes of Africa is carefully curated to showcase the beauty and depth of African music, featuring talks and a blend of traditional melodies, rhythmic beats, and soulful vocals that have stood the test of time.
